Robert Rodriguez presents CURANDERO now available

Venezuelan director Eduardo Rodriguez (no relation) directed this genre bending film based on a script by Robert Rodriguez. It got released to DVD and Video-on-Demand last week. The horror movie is about a couple on a crazy trip through the Mexican underworld. Federale Magdalena (Gizeht Galatea) calls upon curandero Carlos (Carlos Gallardo, from El Mariachi) to perform exorcism in a police station. However, the two of them get tangled up in the battleground of a satanic cult.

Luz Maria Rojas and Eduardo Rodriguez adapted Robert’s original screenplay, and Robert stayed on as producer through his “RIP” (Rodriguez International Pictures). It is being distributed by Dimension Films, bringing on board his former wife Elizabeth Avellan and the Weinstein Brothers. Interestingly, IMDB lists the film from 2005, so it took a while for it to evolve and eventually find its way to the public.

A commentary with Director Eduardo Rodriguez and Director of Photography Jaime Reynoso is also included on the DVD’s special features, and the Ultraviolet Digital Copy, for whoever uses Ultraviolet. If you have seen Curandero, comment below and let us know how you liked it.

Robert lining up projects and launching TV channel 2012

El ReyWhile the hugely popular SXSW festival and conference was going down last month, Robert Rodriguez (with home field advantage) popped the cork on a bunch of things he is lining up for this year (thanks to Rama for the heads up). Robert is not only lining up a few movies and a TV program, but also a new production company, animated features and a partnership with chip-maker AMD.

  • He is launching an animation company called Quickdraw Animation, with two feature-film projects already in the works, as well as a filmmaking contest with his technology partner AMD. The first film will be Heavy Metal, the other a family-friendly movie.
  • He announced several new Quickdraw Productions initiatives. Sin City 2 is moving ahead and in casting, Machete Kills will also shoot this year, possibly as early as this month.
  • Tito and Ttarantula played at SXSW with Robert to footage from Desperado (Video on YouTube),  as well as Chingon
  • He is launching a new TV network catering to the target audience of young latinos, called El Rey. The El Rey network will be launching later this year.

Extra > Here’s a lengthy 20-minute video from SXSW with a conversation between Shira Lazar and Robert that you should really watch: Huffpost

Extra 2 > Here’s a video of Robert at the AMD VISIONary Young Director’s contest, Youtube (other angle)

We will bring you more news on these individual developments as they come along, of course follow us on the social networks for small bits of info on a several-times-a-day basis.

Machete sequel greenlit: Machete Kills

Earlier this week it was reported that Robert Rodriguez managed to get a green light for a sequel to the grindhouse maverick feature Machete starring Danny Trejo. It should come as no surprise, since from the very beginning there was talk of turning it into a trilogy if it was successful. Upon release of Machete, they joked that there would be a Machete Kills, and a Machete Kills Again.

Machete Kills promo poster

At the European Film Market during the Berlin International Film Festival, which opened Friday, they are now showing off this promotional poster (click to comingsoon.net for the hi-res version), to win backers for the film, which is produced by Alexander Rodnyansky’s AR Films U.S., a partnership between AR Films and Aldamisa Entertainment. Deadline quotes Robert saying “The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance. Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.” If all goes right, and Trejo is on board, the movie is slated to start shooting this April as a Quick Draw Production, produced by Rodriguez himself, Rodnyansky (of said AR Films, the main investor), and Quick Draw’s Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic, as well as Sergei Bespalov (of Aldamisa) and Rick Schwartz. Apparently a script continuing the legend of Machete is already on the table, written by Kyle Ward, and developed by Rodriguez and Marcel Rodriguez.

Deadline‘s report quotes the plot summary as follows: “The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.”

Mariachi Trilogy coming to BluRay disc

Grab your popcorn, put some beer within reach and switch your hopefully rather big flat screens on, because the Mariachi is coming to town, in high definition! That’s right! Robert Rodriguez’ Mexico Trilogy (or Mariachi trilogy) is coming to BluRay disc, packed with extras and beautiful HD sound and video. It’s been a while for these movies, but now El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon A Time in Mexico can be yours on BluRay. We are pretty excited about this, and January 4th is the day. Watch out, if you see a guy with a guitar case! Click here to check it out on Amazon.com (scroll down a little, they come in an El Mariach and Desperado two-pack, and OUATIM comes extra)

Thanks to Rama’s Screen for the heads up.

The Official Machete Trailer is here

The official Machete trailer is here. It will also be attached to theatrical screenings of Predators later this week. Unlike the Cinco de Mayo trailer that was put up by Robert Rodriguez more as a joke, this one is real and for the first time reveals the new characters and story lines. We see Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Robert deNiro, Cheech Marin and Don Johnson as well as Steven Seagal. Oh what a blast. We cannot wait for this. What do you think? comment below!

IGN has the exclusive video up on their site, along with a few other things

Fire and Ice remake by Robert Rodriguez?

It’s been a bit quiet recently, but that’s only fake silence. There have been some new posters for Predators, which look like nothing special, but it’s nevertheless cool to see some different spins on poster design (click here). The really weird part was when the whole internet started to rumble about race wars and uprisings connected to the fake Machete trailer that Robert Rodriguez released on Cinco de Mayo. On AICN he explains why that’s all bollox and why that is not an official Machete trailer at all neither (click here).

And now for today’s real news: Robert Rodriguez has officially optioned the rights to Fire and Ice, which is an animated movie from 1983 by Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta, which is available from Blue Underground on DVD and on BluRay. Click here to read what Robert has to say on AICN and click here for a related story at our friends from The Playlist.

Machete trailer, Rodriguz music video and Predators character featurettes

Oh man have we been lazy. Yes we’re struggling a bit to keep this website updated, but we’re trying, and make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook, because we usually post stuff there more regularly. So what’s been going on? Basically a bunch of cool shit:

1. Today is Cinco de Mayo, and they have released a special cinco de mayo Machete trailer to the public, that’s just a riot. Head over HERE to AICN to watch it. Don’t fuck with this Mexican, Arizona!

2. They have released a bunch of Predators character featurettes. Watch them here: Noland, Isabelle, Edwin, Royce, and Cuchillo and there’s another Behind The Scenes clip

3. Robert Rodriguez has shot a music video for a local Austin musician, starring Kat Dennings, read about it here: at Slashfilm

Predators trailer is online

We couldn’t wait to see this. And now it is here and it is pretty awesome. This might truly reignite the predator fever among the fan crowd. The Predators trailer is up online at IGN in decent glory and you should absolutely check it out (in high quality if you can). It showcases the characters only a little but lays the groundwork nicely for the setting of the movie, and show little of the evil titular creatures, which is good. We were hoping to see more of the lovely Ms Braga, but maybe they reserved some close-ups for publicity shots :) Anyways, click below to check out the Predators trailer:
